I am sure it has been said before. There are better things to do with your life. I let my children be in that cult for 17 and 14 years respectively (since birth) simply because the people around them were nice. What a lazy father I was, who allowed so much waste of their time simply because my children were babysat by a bunch of nice people. Don't be lazy and put yourself to do better things. The world needs critical thinkers to solve real problems, not fakers wasting their precious time. Use your talents to your benefit and the benefit of others.

Thoughts on going back, am I the only one that feels this way?
by excaliber inhello everyone, i know you have heard this topic before and your probably thinking.
...not again lol.. but i was wondering if anyone has thought of going back for the same reasons as myself, i don't think its the truth but i searched and my conclusion is that other religions don't have the truth, they are all wrong in my opinion.
if there is no other religion to go too, why leave were i was born and raised.

oh dear I think I messed up and pushed too hard
by Frazzled UBM inreading all the posts on the wt study on higher education and careers really fired me up yesterday.
i have 2 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate degerees and a career as a result which allows me to provide well for my jw wife and son.
i was already unhappy because after 5 or 6 weeks of not going and appearing to be making progress she went back on sunday for the second sunday in a row and as usual was away all day.

Leave your wife alone. Save the children. Even in an equal arrangement (not the mysoginist arrangement of the Bible and the WT) you have equal access to your children. Negotiate and get your equal access / control of their education.

Raised On the Third Day?
by TTATTelder ini have some potentially controversial questions.. i have always wondered about these things in the back of my mind, but i would immediately dismiss them.
now i am giving myself permission to explore them further.... a lot of attention is given to how big the sacrifice was on the part of jesus and god when jesus laid down his life.
as the story goes, jesus gave his life for our sins and then was miraculously raised back to life a couple of days later.. consider this.

Breakfast of champions asked:
If a thousand years if as one day to god, what is three days?
If 365,250 human days (1,000 human years) correspond to 1 divine day, then 3 human days correspond to 8.22 E-06 Godly days, or 0.7 seconds of divine time
What's the big deal if a divine creature suffers for a fraction of a second (divine time). That make us humans really cheap. If God loved us, why was he willing to lend his son for a fraction of a second only. If you consider that that fraction of a second was for the salvation of millions, then my individual price (Jesus sacrifice) can be measured in nanoseconds. It gets worse, Jesus did not suffer for three human days, just three hours or so. So now divide by 24 whatever tiny number we got. I feel worthless

I think my faith might be returning. Feeling very confused.
by jambon1 ini've been out the organisation for around 8 years.
when i first left, im positive that i suffered from some sort of post traumatic stress.
i was very angry at myself for accepting the really bad parts of the religion that i strongly disagreed with.

Dig deeper. Just as JW's have a history, christianity and the Bible have a history too. Learn those histories. They may help you clear the confusion. I am learning the historical aspect of the Bible and christianity and is doing a lot of good for me. Helps me understand the world and humans much better, and that brings me satisfaction at the same time it reduces confusion or conflict.

by Crazyguy inso last night i had a family meeting and told my kids that i was quitting as a jw and then gave my wife my da letter to give to the one elder i like at the hall tonight.
so this morning i see a text from the co elder the one that met with me and is gunning to get me out and had already tried to get me to a jc meeting this week.

drinking the wine and eating the bread... is very funny, but not wise. Get your fun some other way. Your personal vendettas or your venting is not very useful if you want to win the "war".

Joseph Rutherford and Burlesque
by Amazing inno one really expects 'perfection' of their fellow humans, even of those in high station.
our past president, bill clinton certainly demonstrated that men in high station can and do give into acts that are not accepted by the public at large.
likewise, i doubt anyone expects that joseph rutherford would be perfect, but we would expect that as a human, he had his ways.. what about "true" spiritual leaders?

Another problem for JW apologists
by Jeffro inthe 2013 edition of the new world translation renders 2 kings 17:1 as:.
in the 12th year of king ahaz of judah, hoshea the son of elah became king over israel in samaria; he ruled for nine years.. this is in fact a better rendering than the previous nwt, which stated:.
in the twelfth year of ahaz the king of judah, hoshea the son of elah became king in samaria over israel for nine years.. despite their improved rendering, the watch tower society still claims that hoshea's reign 'really' began in 758 bce, but that it was 'established' in the 12th year of ahaz.

hallowed king James? may be according to those who don't know better, but not that respectable according to scholars who have found many problems with it. It was written at a time when we didn't have at our disposal as many ancient manuscripts and the sophisticated textual criticism that we have today.

Rolf Furuli's accusation about VAT 4956 being tampered with?

how does rolf furuli know that it was tampered with?

My two cents,
If anyone tampered with VAT4956 they would have had to modify almost every line of the tablet. I believe that Furuli only questioned few places of the tablet. When you test the lunar observations, the planet observations and the time intervals with a modern astronomy program, you realize that in many cases some of those observations can only happen once every several hundreds of years, especially planetary positions. If just one observation is rare, imagine almost all those observations (more than 30) matching within a very small margin of error for the same year (587/586 BCE). The chances of that tablet corresponding to any year other than 587/586 BCE are tiny at best, even if we take out the "suspicious" places pointed by Furuli. He is as dishonest as the Goberning Body. They know they are wrong, but their continuos lying is easier than admitting they are wrong.

Thinking of taking a break from this forum
by yadda yadda 2 instarting to feel my time is wasted on here lately and its time to move on.. some of the best, meaty stuff only gets a few hundreds views and as soon as the posts dry up a bit the thread is soon forgotten (usually in a few days) under the constantly falling snowflakes of new threads (many trival) continuously being created and popping up as 'active topics'.
the same core jw related subjects then keep reappearing over and over again as new threads without getting a thorough treatment at the time (eg, there must be at least one 'are jw's a cult' thread started each week on here; 'new light' topics get about 20 new threads started with the quality of analysis spread and diluted over all of them.).
anyone else tend to feel the same way at times?.

This is a great site, but just as many great posters before (e.g. Leolaia), most of us will move on. You know best when is the right time for you. I hope I am getting very close to that day. I got lots of things that I am postponing simply because I spent too much time reading here. Great site (thank you Simon), but life outside of the internet can be even better.

Thank you all for your help.
I am reading Misquoting Jesus by Bart Ehrman. That's how I discovered the controversy. I guess is not just a controversy between JW's and the rest, but a controversy even among other religions and bible scholars.
As a lover of history, and a "hater" of religion, I find it ironic that I am quite immersed in the Bible textual criticism and history of Christianity. It is such an interesting subject. Interestingly, most devout christians know little or nothing about it. Here I am, an atheist, ar agnostic, or whatever I am, reading at 1:30 a.m. with great interest about old bible manuscripts, scribes of antiquity and ante-nicene fathers, while my JW's brothers with their 25 plus years of reading the Bible know squat about the subject. Oh my God, the irony!
